2008 poker goals

Well 2007 is winding up so I should set some goals for 2008. These were my 2007 goals. There were 9 of them and I did around 5. Not great but not terrible either.

So these are my 2008 poker goals.
  • move up in no limit cash from current $5 NL through to $50 NL
  • move up in 2 table turbo sit 'n go from current $6.50 to $16.50
  • in MTT get up to the $11/180 level
  • get and read Harrington on cash games
  • invest in software tools including PokerTracker and PA HUD
  • play $200 NL live at the local casino
  • join the small group of people who make a withdrawal off a site
  • continue to enjoy playing
That list looks ambitious. I may not do all of these things. That's OK if I don't. I hope to do at least some of them.

Overpair still no good

In micro level no limit cash, when a passive player raises a strong bet then he almost always has a strong hand. In this case strong means 2 pair or better, i.e. beating an overpair or TPTK.

There isn't much bluff at this level so when a passive player or an unknown raises a strong postflop bet then the correct move is generally to reluctantly fold top pair or an overpair. Here's an example where I chose a poor spot to donate over 80 BB to a bad player.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (9 handed)

MP1 ($3.70)
MP2 ($2.74)
MP3 ($4.20)
CO ($6)
Button [Ts 3s] ($4.92)
Hero [Qd, Qs] ($7.90)
BB ($1.67)
UTG ($3.27)
UTG+1 ($10.85)

Preflop: Hero is SB with Qd, Qs. CO posts a blind of $0.05.
5 folds, CO (poster) checks, Button calls $0.05, Hero raises to $0.35, 1 fold, CO folds, Button calls $0.30.

Flop: ($0.80) Th, 3c, 6d (2 players)
Hero bets $0.50, Button raises to $1, Hero raises to $7.55, Button calls $3.57 (All-In).

Turn: ($9.94) 2s (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($9.94) Kh (2 players, 1 all-in)

Results:
Hero has Qd Qs (one pair, queens).
Button has Ts 3s (two pair, tens and threes).
Outcome: Button wins $9.94.

I've written about this before at $2 NL and it is still the same story here. I need to find better situations to play big pots and find some more folds.

The local casino scene

I don't go to my local casino too much. Back in October on my birthday I took advantage of the birthday free meal and dropped in. I stopped by the poker room to have a look around.

The last time I was in the poker room at the casino was December 2005. There's been some changes since then. In 2005 there were around 6 tables out on the main floor next to the bar. Today there is a nice separate spacious poker room with around 10 tables. They could add more tables if necessary for a big tournament or something.

The cash games have changed since late 2005. This was a big surprise to me. In 2005 the game was $5/$10 and $10/$20 limit hold'em. On Monday and Tuesday there was a $2/$4 LHE game available.

Today the cash games are all no limit. $1/$2 and $2/$4 no limit hold'em. The only limit game around is the occasional $15/$30 game that doesn't always get off the ground.

So if I want to play at the casino then I'll have to play NL cash. And I do want to play live. I heard it's pretty beatable. Up until now having bankroll to sit down has been the challenge. It's still a challenge but there's a chance I'll get an opportunity to play there sometime next year.

So I've now switched over to no limit as my online cash game. I only play $5 NL due to inexperience, bankroll and I'm trying to learn to multi table. It's been swingy through around 2000 hands in. I dropped 2 buyins at the start, then I was up three, now I'm back to around even. The level is beatable but I'm probably not playing really well. If I get an OK run going I'll plan to move up and see how it goes.

The Set Mine

I'm glad to be back online and playing again. My new computer has Office so it was a breeze getting my database and spreadsheet back up. I'm glad about that.

In micro stakes no limit cash set mining is highly profitable. A set is a very strong hand and it is especially valuable when opponents will overplay 1 and 2 pair hands and put a lot of money in when they are way behind.

The willingness to stack off with an overpair or TPTK combined with deep NL cash game stacks makes it profitable to call preflop raises with small to mid pairs. If you flop a set then you can often get it all in for a big hand. If you don't flop a set then just check/fold the flop and move on. The implied odds from spiking a set make it worth calling a preflop raise for set value.

In this example I was fortunate to get into a wild loose $5 NL cash game. By set mining I was able to turn $5.39 into $24.34 at this table.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (3 handed)

Hero ($5.39)
SB ($12.07)
BB ($22.23)

Preflop: Hero is Button with Tc, Td.
Hero raises to $0.20, SB calls $0.18, BB calls $0.15.

Flop: ($0.60) Th, 3c, 7h (3 players)
SB bets $0.10, BB calls $0.10, Hero calls $0.10.

Turn: ($0.90) 7d (3 players)
SB bets $0.30, BB raises to $0.60, Hero calls $0.60, SB calls $0.30.

River: ($2.70) Kd (3 players)
SB bets $0.50, BB folds, Hero raises to $4.49, SB calls $3.99.

Final Pot: $11.68

Results:
Hero has Tc Td (full house, tens full of sevens).
SB has 9s Kh (two pair, kings and sevens).
Outcome: Hero wins $11.68.

In this first hand the table went short but I stuck around figuring it would fill again. The opponents were terrible making wacky bets and raises with nothing and calling all ins with like bottom pair. I let the donkey bet it out and shoved the river in position, hoping he'd call and he did. It was great flopping the set of 10s since he'd pay off with top pair.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (7 handed)

Button ($12.29)
Hero ($10.37)
BB ($4.50)
UTG ($4.85)
MP1 ($5)
MP2 ($18.50)
CO ($9.99)

Preflop: Hero is SB with 8s, 8h.
2 folds, MP2 raises to $0.20, 1 fold, Button calls $0.20, Hero calls $0.18, BB raises to $0.35, MP2 calls $0.15, Button calls $0.15, Hero calls $0.15.

--> I called the raise figuring I'd get paid off if I hit a set. SB is the same fellow I doubled off in the hand above. Of course he makes a donk min 3bet, keeping me priced in. MP2 should have shoved over the min 3bet. He's way ahead of donkey's range.

Flop: ($1.40) 8c, 7s, Kd (4 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $0.25, MP2 raises to $2.2, Button folds, Hero calls $2.20, BB calls $1.95.

--> Flopped the set. I checked figuring BB or the original raiser would be active. I just called hoping BB would 3bet all in. No matter all the money's going in on the turn anyway.

Turn: ($8) Ts (3 players)
Hero bets $7.82 (All-In), BB calls $1.95 (All-In), MP2 calls $7.82.

River: ($13.85) 8d (3 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: $25.59

Results below:
Hero has 8s 8h (four of a kind, eights).
BB has Qh Kh (two pair, kings and eights).
MP2 has Ac Ks (two pair, kings and eights).
Outcome: Hero wins $25.59.

Nice, a 500 BB pot at $5 NL. My first $20 pot.

Trying out tournaments

I'm getting myself back online now after a short time away. I'll be moving in some new directions including spending more time on big multi table tournaments. I'll have more to write about it in the coming weeks. I've been playing in the Stars Grey Cup freeroll which has been fun and I'll also be playing in the Stars bloggers tournament.

Texas Holdem Poker

I have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker!

This Online Poker Tournament is a No Limit Texas Holdem event exclusive to Bloggers.

Registration code: 5675536

It should have a good overlay and hopefully I'll have a good run.

Backed up

I'm going to be losing the PC I have always played from soon. As a result I'll be losing my environment I've set up.

My setup consists of the PokerStars client, an Access database that I use to record cash game session results and tournament results, and an Excel spreadsheet for calculating stuff like win rates and ROI. The Access DB has the tables and data itself, as well as some simple forms and some queries. The queries from the Access DB populate the Excel spreadsheet.

I don't know when I'll be set up with a new PC. Pretty soon hopefully. Getting back in the poker game is definitely a motivator to get myself back online quickly. There's some stuff I have to work through that's not applicable to this blog.

Doing the backup is pretty easy. I just e-mailed the spreadsheet .xls file, the DB .mdb as well as my PokerStars Notes.txt to my Gmail account as attachments. When I'm ready to restore I can get the files back intact to my hard drive pretty easily.

I won't know until I get it what the software will be on my new (to me) PC. The Stars client is of course a free download so that will be easy. I can just overwrite the Notes.txt from the backup to restore my old notes.

Moving your PokerStars notes from one computer to another is pretty easy. Just save the file C:\Program Files\PokerStars\Notes.txt from the original computer and restore it into the new computer, replacing the Notes.txt on the new computer. You can save the Notes.txt by e-mailing it to yourself as an attachment using Gmail or other e-mail program.

My new PC might or might not have Microsoft Office. If it doesn't have it I'd prefer to avoid having to purchase it. I expect the spreadsheet will be easily replaceable. Google spreadsheets is Excel compatible and I'm not doing anything funky in my spreadsheet so I figure I can use that as an alternative.

The Access replacement looks a bit trickier. For the DB part I'm comfortable enough with Oracle or MySQL which are free for personal use. But for the forms I don't really want to write an application myself although I could. Oracle DB/Oracle Forms would probably get by as I've worked with Oracle Forms enough in the past. It looks like OpenOffice has a database component which has forms capability and can work with the Access (Jet) database file. So OpenOffice may well be good enough for my purposes. I'll probably try OpenOffice first.

As a precaution, I've exported the data from the Access DB into an Excel spreadsheet and sent that to myself in Gmail as an attachment. Also I've saved the SQL text of the queries and screen shots of the forms to a Word document so I'll be able to read them back later if I can't open the Access file.

Onto the last hands on my original Internet poker PC. I finished up on a positive note, winning a seat in a $2.20 4 table turbo satellite sng to the big Sunday Hundred tournament. I then unregistered to get the $11 tournament dollars. I managed to win a hand in a short $0.50/$1.00 limit hold'em session to post a session profit.

In the tournament I get off to a good start in the early going. A bad player passes up three clear opportunities to correctly fold and instead puts all of his money in as a big underdog and goes bust.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed)

MP2 (t1520)
MP3 (t1430)
CO (t1520)
Button (t1860)
SB (t1420)
Hero (t1500)

Preflop: Hero is BB with Kd, As.
3 folds, MP2 [Ad Qc] raises to t60, 4 folds, Hero raises to t180, MP2 calls t120.

Flop: (t370) 9d, Kc, 9c (2 players)
Hero bets t220, MP2 calls t220.

Turn: (t810) Ts (2 players)
Hero bets t1100 (All-In), MP2 calls t1100.

River: (t3010) Qs (2 players, 1 all-in)
Final Pot: t3010

Showdown:
Hero has Kd As (two pair, kings and nines).
MP2 has Ad Qc (two pair, queens and nines).
Outcome: Hero wins t3010.

A bit later another bad player misplays a hand on multiple streets and gets stacked.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t50 (9 handed)

SB (t3230)
BB (t995)
UTG (t1570)
UTG+1 (t1815)
MP1 (t1260)
Hero (t3110)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with Jh, Ac.
3 folds, Hero raises to t150, 4 folds, BB [8s Ks] calls t100.

-- With his short stack cold calling the raise with such a weak hand is a big mistake. The best play here is to fold and try to open push with first in vigorish. Otherwise he should have moved all in preflop with some fold equity and to ensure he could see all 5 cards. There's not a single hand in my preflop raising range he is ahead of.

Flop: (t325) Js, 2h, Kd (2 players)
BB checks, Hero bets t220, BB calls t220.

-- He flops top pair then strangely check/calls. This pot commits him for the rest of his stack while allowing me to still get away from the hand if I don't improve on the turn, which gives me great implied odds. Better plays on the flop would be to just push to protect his hand or checkraise all in.

Turn: (t765) As (2 players)
BB bets t625 (All-In), Hero calls t625.

-- On the turn he makes the worst mistake in poker. He puts his money in as an underdog. Drawing slim he goes bust on the river.

River: (t2015) 8d (2 players, 1 all-in)
Final Pot: t2015

Showdown:
BB has 8s Ks (two pair, kings and eights).
Hero has Jh Ac (two pair, aces and jacks).
Outcome: Hero wins t2015.

Hands like these two where bad players can be so easily stacked postflop make me want to start playing in some slower structure tournaments such as the $4.40 180 player tournaments.

Like any tournament I've won or gone deep in, I had to get lucky along the way. Here the blinds are threatening my stack so I have to make a move but unluckily run into two much better hands. Thanks to a miracle flop I stay alive.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t400 (7 handed)

Hero (t2585)
Button (t430)
SB (t1653)

Preflop: Hero is CO with 9c, Jc.
3 folds, Hero raises to t2560, Button [Kd Ks] calls t405 (All-In), 1 fold, BB [Qd Ac] calls t2160.

Flop: (t5275) As, 9s, Js (3 players, 1 all-in)
Turn: (t5275) 3c (3 players, 1 all-in)
River: (t5275) 6c (3 players, 1 all-in)
Final Pot: t5275

Showdown:
BB has Qd Ac (one pair, aces).
Hero has 9c Jc (two pair, jacks and nines).
Button has Kd Ks (one pair, kings).
Outcome: Hero wins t5275.

I don't feel too bad about button's bad beat. He's a fish for letting his stack get that low.

And finally I get a great hand at a key time with the blinds going up blazing fast. Luckily my better hand held up.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t600 (5 handed)

Button (t9285)
Hero (t5422)
BB (t2481)
UTG (t5372)
MP (t1280)

Preflop: Hero is SB with Kh, Ac.
UTG [As Td] raises to t5322, 2 folds, Hero raises to t5372, 1 fold.

Flop: (t10844) 7h, Qc, 5d (2 players)
Turn: (t10844) 6d (2 players)
River: (t10844) 3h (2 players)
Final Pot: t10794

Showdown:
Hero has Kh Ac (high card, ace).
UTG has As Td (high card, ace).
Outcome: Hero wins t10794.

And that was it. The table condensed into the final table where I was the chip leader. Since I didn't have to play another hand to qualify I just folded everything and easily coasted to a seat.

----

My last winning limit hold'em hand on the good old poker PC which will be missed.

PokerStars 0.50/1.00 Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 8s, 6s.
UTG raises, 2 folds, MP2 calls, 1 fold, CO calls, Button calls, SB calls, Hero calls.

-- with a truckload of cold callers and closing the action with 11:1 pot odds and good relative position on the preflop raiser I think this is a correct call with a medium suited one gapper.

Flop: (12 SB) 4s, Kh, Jh (6 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, MP2 checks, CO checks, Button checks.

-- I miss the flop and have to check fold. Miraculously it gets checked through 6 way.

Turn: (6 BB) Ts (6 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, MP2 checks, CO bets, Button folds, SB folds, Hero calls, UTG folds, MP2 folds.

-- On the turn I pick up a flush draw. Thanks to all the cold callers preflop bloating the pot I have pot odds to call.

River: (8 BB) Ks (2 players)
Hero bets, CO folds.

Final Pot: 8 BB

Results:
Hero has 8s 6s (flush, king high).
Outcome: Hero wins 8 BB.

On the river my line is bet/crying call. Villian could raise trip kings but I'm usually beat if raised. The reason I didn't checkraise is hands I beat will just check behind and not bet, but they may call. Hands that beat me will always bet and getting a checkraise 3bet here would be a tough spot for me to be in.

A Winning Month

Well July is in the books and I was up for the month. July was my first winning month after three consecutive down months. I was lifted by hitting on both the limit hold'em and sng cylinders.

My bankroll is close to the previous high before the slide. I don't think I'd had a losing month before this slide in the short time I've played online. During April-June I lost 19% of my bankroll.

Downswings and break even happens and as long as you're playing better than your opponents then over time you should gain. For me I don't get to play too much and I don't multi table so it takes longer in terms of calendar time for downswings to play out. I felt I was playing mostly OK, well enough to win. Hopefully I'll get back up over the previous high water mark and put together a nice string of plus months.

In poker it's like the tide coming in or out. When waves come in you go up, then when they recede you go back down. However overall if the tide is rising then the up waves are greater than the receding waves and you're getting ahead. But if the tide is going out then the waves going out are greater than the waves coming in and you're slowly going down.

New micro stakes tournament

I noticed PokerStars has started running an interesting new micro stakes sit n' go. It's a $2.20 4 table satellite to the Sunday Hundred. The top 6 finishers get an $11 entry into the huge $100,000 guaranteed Sunday tournament and seventh gets $6.

I want to play in the big Sunday hundred but I typically don't have time for multi hour tournaments, plus it starts at 5:30 PM local time which is not a great time to be playing. The thing about a satellite is that if you win an entry to the tournament you can just unregister and the $11 is credited to your account as tournament dollars T$. The T$ can then be used to enter any tournament. So the way to efficiently convert T$ to regular bankroll is to use the T$ to enter tournaments where you have a break even or positive expectation.

This looks like a more profitable tournament than the $1.75 2 table sng I've played before. In the $2.20 The registration fee is only 1/10 the buyin. In the $1.75 it's 1/6 the buyin.

In a previous post, I determined that I need to finish in the top two 18.5% of the time to break even on top finishes in the $1.75.

In the $2.20 satellite the payout for the top six is level and 7th gets a healthy $6. So the average cash is 6/7($11) + 1/7($6) = $10.29. So I'd need to finish in the money 21.4% of the time to break even in the $2.20. It's easier to finish in the top 7 of a 4 table tournament than the top 2 of a 2 table tournament so the lower registration fee makes the break even point lower.

For ROI, I've run at around 80% in the $1.75, an average profit of $1.40 for every one I enter. To average $1.40 profit at the $2.20 level I only need to achieve 64% ROI. From what I've seen it looks pretty beatable, no tougher than the $1.75.

So I gave it a try and managed to win a seat in the first one I played in. I was helped along with some key hands.

MP2 has 4d Ad (two pair, aces and fours).
Outcome: Hero wins t3655.

In this hand villain limps in early position with A4s, not a good play. Then he overplays a weak two pair hand and doubles my flopped set, losing half his stack. Playing for stacks in a limped pot with 2 pair is bad. When the money goes in on the turn or river two pair is rarely good.

Outcome: Hero wins t3530.

In this hand a bad player limps in early position with QJ a mistake. She'd had a big stack earlier but managed to lose most of it on bad plays. Then she raises all in on the flop with top pair and a weak kicker on a paired board. I have T9 in the BB and my trips are good to bust a bad player.

I've never won or gone deep in a tournament without getting lucky along the way. I have 88 in early position 6 handed with an effective M of around 6, so I pushed. Luckily I picked up an OESD on the flop and hit on the turn to suck out on AA.

After this lucky break I had enough stack to qualify so I just coasted in, not really playing any more hands.

Hand strength at heads up

At heads up hand values go way up. This can be combined with getting a read on the opponent to make some plays you might not make at a full table.

Here's the second hand of heads up. In the first hand I checked 78s in the BB and bet/folded bottom pair on the flop. Calling the raise would have committed me and I figured I was only beating a bluff.

In heads up any Ace preflop is a strong hand. I raise and get min 3bet. I have to call the 3bet because of pot odds and calling it pretty much makes me pot committed so I just pushed. I thought villain was kind of a donk so I wasn't convinced I was behind.

Outcome: Hero wins t11750.

Turns out my read was good and fortunately my lead held up. He was 3betting light trying to make me fold. Good to know.

I couple of hands later came this key hand.

Villain again makes a donk all in move. I figured if he had a king or a better Jack then he would have raised preflop. Plus in heads up middle pair is a strong hand so I called.

Again my read was correct and my better hand held up giving me a big chip lead.

Villain then moved all in before the flop the next three hands and I just folded. I could afford to wait for something worth calling him with.

The next hand I'm dealt K4 and villain again is all in preflop.

The average hand in hold'em is Q7. I have K4 and if villain is pushing any two cards which it seems he was then K4 is ahead of his range. So I called the all in with king high.

Turns out he had the better starting hand. Luckily for me I beat him on the flop to take it down. It was fortunate overall to have my better hands hold up and my worse hand win. Still I was in good shape even if he won that hand and I think I would have won later on anyway.

A bit of luck

I needed to get lucky to win my first $15 pot at $0.25/$0.50 limit. I managed to parlay middle pair on the flop to a full house by the river to suck out on a flopped straight.

I think I mostly played it OK. Preflop I have an OK drawing hand QTs. When the early limpers call the raise I'm getting around 10:1 to see a flop with good implied odds if I can connect by flopping a good draw.

The flop is OK I have an oesd plus middle pair. I'm probably still behind here but I have pretty good equity so I bet. The flop was getting capped anyway.

The turn is misplayed. I improve to trips but that only pulls me ahead of MP3 if he has QQ-AA. I'm behind JJ, 99, AT and KQ which are all in his range and my checkraise gets 3bet. I think check/call is better on the turn and hope for more help on the river.

On the river I get lucky. The board pairs to give me the full house and my first $15 pot at this level. I won one at $0.50/$1.00 before but this one is more satisfying for some reason.

Strangely I then won another $15 pot at $0.25/$0.50 a few days later. This time it was KK unimproved over some really bad players. I was surprised at showdown to have the best hand. An overpair or TPTK are usually not good in a multiway showdown in a pot that large when that many people see the flop. I was lucky in a way.

Probability Stack

To be able to play poker well I think you need to be able to apply probability. Everything is built on the foundation of probability. Consider something like implied odds.

This example hand will illustrate. A tight player in a no limit game open raises 6x the BB from early position. It folds around to you on the button with 77. When villain makes this unusual size preflop raise he always has AA or KK. He will move all in the rest of his stack on any flop because he wants to win the hand there. What should you do, fold or call?

As stated, this question cannot be answered correctly. It problem is that it doesn't say how much money you and villain will have left in your stacks when the flop comes down. Without that you don't know your implied odds for spiking a 7 on the flop and stacking villain.

To use implied odds effectively you need to have a strong grasp on

---- implied odds extends pot odds
--- pot odds applies expected value
-- expected value applies probability
- probability is the chance that some event will occur

So at the base of the stack is probability. If your foundation in probability is weak or non-existent then you can't build anything on top of it and you'll be at a disadvantage when playing against opponents who have this ability.

Do you understand probability? The Monte Hall problem is a good probability comprehension test. Here's the problem quoted from Wikipedia

Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?

If you can answer this correctly and explain your answer within two minutes just thinking about it in your head without writing anything down then you have a good understanding of probability and you can easily use the concepts of probability and pot odds to your profit in poker.

If you can't get it then you just don't really get probability and you likely won't be very good at poker.

--

I once wasted about half an hour of my life on this problem. An individual was struggling with it and asked me about it. I explained the solution slowly to him several times, providing step by step descriptions and even doing a nice series of diagrams. After numerous attempts going over it he seemed to indicate he finally got it.

Then like two minutes later he asked something about the numbers on the doors which showed that he hadn't grasped it at all! He was still as confused as when he initially read the problem.

Check trey

The check/3bet is an elegant play in limit hold'em. I don't often get to use it because I tend to play at passive tables where there isn't a lot of action when it gets back to me, or if there is action then it means I'm beat and have to just fold. But it is fun when I get to do it.

The check/3bet and check/cap are seen more at higher levels where the play is trickier and more aggressive.

In this hand I have AT in the BB. I considered raising but I decided to just check and see the flop. I didn't want to raise a marginal hand out of position. Plus if I hit the flop the strength of my hand would be disguised.

Turn: (7.70 BB) 6d (3 players)
Hero bets, MP1 calls.

River: (9.70 BB) Qc (3 players)
Hero bets, MP1 folds.

Final Pot: 10.70 BB
Results :
Hero has Ah Ts (two pair, aces and sixes).
CO has 3h 2c (one pair, sixes).

Outcome: Hero wins 10.70 BB.

On this hand MP1 would always bet the flop when checked to so I planned to checkraise him on the flop with a better hand. CO is a fish who I wasn't too worried about.

In other limit news, I've retreated back to $0.25/$0.50 after a short losing foray into $0.50/$1.00. After a quick start including winning my first $15 pot, I hit a downswing and cominbed with up and down tournament results I don't have the bankroll for that level. So back to $0.25/$0.50 to regroup and try to grind up some BB for another shot. I'll also consider trying 6 max again as the full ring $0.50/$1.00 tables are much less inviting than at $0.25/$0.50.

KK running into AA

A question which sometimes comes up when you're dealt a pair of kings, what's the chance that someone still to act is holding Aces.

This is actually not difficult to calculate directly. We need to make some assumptions. In this ultra tight game, opponents will always enter the pot with AA, and fold otherwise. For Shania, you've decided it will be profitable to expand your portfolio of opening hands to also include KK. You've been dealt KK and you want to know the chance that someone has AA.

Let

a = number of players still to act
f = the number of players before you who have folded
P = probability that someone still to act has AA

Then the formula is

This can be expanded to any pocket pair.

Let

z = the number of overpairs to your pocket pair. For KK z=1, QQ z=2, ... 22 z=12

Then the probability that a player still to act has a higher pocket pair is

This can be plugged into an Excel spreadsheet as follows

You can get the preflop overpair calculator spreadsheet by e-mailing me. I used to have a spreadsheet online put the FTP site I was using is gone. I tried to post it to Google docs but Google's online spreadsheet choked on the equation with an overflow.

Plugging some numbers into the spreadsheet yields these results. Remember this model requires that anyone who acted before you does not have an overpair to your pocket pair and has folded.

UTG in a 10 handed game with KK, there is a 4.0% chance someone has AA.
UTG in a 9 handed game with KK, there is a 3.6% chance someone has AA.
UTG in a 6 handed game with KK, there is a 2.2% chance someone has AA.
UTG in a 10 handed game with QQ, there is a 7.9% chance someone has AA or KK.
UTG in a 10 handed game with 22, there is a 39.6% chance someone has 33-AA.

Folded to the button in a 10 handed game with KK there is a 0.9% chance someone has AA.
Folded to the button in a 10 handed game with QQ there is a 1.8% chance someone has AA or KK.
Folded to the button in a 6 handed game with 22 there is a 10.6% chance someone has 33-AA.

Yahoo poker

When I started playing I started out on Yahoo poker for play money. That is a good site to start out at if you haven't played before.

What's interesting is that Yahoo is now offering a real money site. This could be big news if mainstream Internet start to promote poker. Hopefully large numbers of bad players will start playing for real money and MSN and Google will match Yahoo with competing poker sites. Maybe the Frith thing will be like the scopes monkey trial. A last symbolic victory of a spent force.

Short heads up battle

This is new for me. Heads up lasted for only one hand where we both had an OK stack going in. I managed to win a two table $6.50 turbo sit n' go tournament thanks to a suckout. I've said before I've never won or gone deep in a tournament without getting lucky along the way. This was the one and only hand of heads up.

Moving up, no limit cash

Well it's been a cycle of moving up. I've decided to move up in the no limit cash game. I'm going to try moving from the $2 NL to $5 NL level.

I had a slow start at $2 NL, dropping 3 buyins quickly. The slow start was caused by a mix of bad luck and some bad play by me. Since then I recovered and made some adjustments. I tightened up a bit preflop and found some more folds postflop (still a work in progress). My good hands started holding up better and I erased the initial defecit and now I'm up $6 or 3 buyins. My win rate was around 20 ptBB/100 hands over a small sample size.

As you'd expect the play is bad at $2 NL, really bad. People are calling preflop raises and 3bets with any two cards. Postflop people are remarkably willing to stack off with overpair, top pair, weak two pair, gutshot straight draw and flush draw. The level is pretty beatable but there's variance due to people calling down so much to stay in hands.

So on to $5 NL. That will be my new NL cash game home. I hope I can be successful there and slowly build up a somewhat respectable NL cash game. If not then I'll have to quit NL cash or just play $5 NL occasionally. I'm not going back to $2 NL. The play is just too bad there.

Moving up, limit cash

I've decided to take a shot at low stakes limit hold'em. I'm going to mix in some $0.50/$1.00 with $0.25/$0.50.

I've run well at $0.25/$0.50, making 150 BB so far with a healthy win rate of around 8 BB/100. Thanks to some sit n' go contributions my bankroll is enough to take a 100BB shot at the next level. The sample size is too small to be conclusive, but I'm confident I'm beating $0.25/$0.50 if only because there are so many bad players there donating.

So far in limit I've moved through the micro stakes levels with a good win rate at each level. Of course people don't just keep moving up. If that was the case everyone would be playing $100/$200. Poker has an efficient Peter Principle. Once you reach the level of your incompetence you either go bust or have to move down. In general I believe that moving up each level is progressively tougher, there are fewer players at each level up, and fewer players at a given level will be able to reach the next level higher.

Pretty much everyone hits the wall somewhere. Over on 2+2 in the micro stakes limit forum, people report hitting the wall at different levels including $0.50/$1.00, $1/$2, $2/$4, $5/$10. So who knows how it will go. I hope I can stick at the next level because I like the sound of calling myself a low stakes player. The term small stakes player is also pleasing.

In the past when I moved up I made a clean break from the previous level. That was possible because there were always good tables available to play at in the new level. I don't think that will be possible at $0.50/$1.00. There seem to be fewer good tables at that level, and there is often a substantial waiting list. I do resolve to continue to be disciplined about table and seat selection, looking for high flop percentages, known fish, and position on the bad players. If it's not there then no play. I'm not going to lower my game selection standards so that I can get into a game.

So like many, I'll play a mix of levels looking for profitable tables. I'll use a progression. Start by looking for a good $0.50/$1.00 table. If nothing good then look for a good $0.25/$0.50 game. If still nothing then do a sit n' go or play NL cash or take a 5 minute break and look again. So I guess I can say I play $0.25/$0.50 and $0.50/$1.00.

I don't mind sticking around some more at $0.25/$0.50. That is an enjoyable and profitable level. There are a remarkable number of fish there. Plus a modest 10BB pot is a cool $5, which is always nice to win. I was able to drag a couple of $10 pots at $0.25/$0.50. I came close but just missed a couple of $15 pots. One time I had queens in a 5 way capped preflop. I flopped top set and the 2 suit flop was capped 3 way. Unfortunately villian who had called a capped preflop with KT hit his straight on the turn to win. I wasn't able to boat up on the river. That's OK, if people want to call a capped preflop with KT then that's profitable for me long term. At $0.50/$1.00 with the higher stakes I hope I can take my first $15 pot, and hopefully a $20 pot too.

Tournament win $6.50 2 table

I'm off to a good start in the $6.50 2 table turbo sit n' go tournaments. I won the first one I played in. Hand history below. I've been kind of procrastinating trying them out. I was on an upswing in $0.25/$0.50 limit hold'em so I wanted to ride that out. Plus I was a bit nervous about moving up to low stakes. But I resolved that I'd play one so I finally went ahead and did it.

As expected the play seemed better than in the $1.75 tournaments I've played. However I felt comfortable enough. I was getting good cards, especially that real nice rush at the end. That was the major factor in my win. At the end the blinds were high so it was a crapshoot. That's the ideal time to get a rush of cards. It helps when your good hands always hold up with no suckouts too. I've never won or gone deep in a tournament without getting very good luck along the way.

I feel I played mostly OK. Some hands might be not great. Hand 10 I was trying to catch a loose caller, but I should have made a standard raise before the flop. Hand 49 was arguably a bad play. Hand 57 I should have just pushed before the flop as it would have disguised my hand better. I don't think I was getting called anyway there. I don't know what villian was thinking on hand 30 when he folded considering the pot odds, his M, my M, I was in the blinds, and I'd already pushed over a preflop raise.

Here's the hand history.
