Tournament win $6.50 2 table

I'm off to a good start in the $6.50 2 table turbo sit n' go tournaments. I won the first one I played in. Hand history below. I've been kind of procrastinating trying them out. I was on an upswing in $0.25/$0.50 limit hold'em so I wanted to ride that out. Plus I was a bit nervous about moving up to low stakes. But I resolved that I'd play one so I finally went ahead and did it.

As expected the play seemed better than in the $1.75 tournaments I've played. However I felt comfortable enough. I was getting good cards, especially that real nice rush at the end. That was the major factor in my win. At the end the blinds were high so it was a crapshoot. That's the ideal time to get a rush of cards. It helps when your good hands always hold up with no suckouts too. I've never won or gone deep in a tournament without getting very good luck along the way.

I feel I played mostly OK. Some hands might be not great. Hand 10 I was trying to catch a loose caller, but I should have made a standard raise before the flop. Hand 49 was arguably a bad play. Hand 57 I should have just pushed before the flop as it would have disguised my hand better. I don't think I was getting called anyway there. I don't know what villian was thinking on hand 30 when he folded considering the pot odds, his M, my M, I was in the blinds, and I'd already pushed over a preflop raise.

Freerolling

I played in a couple of freerolls recently. Usually I don't bother with them but I will play in them occasionally. They're a diversion, somewhat fun, kind of silly, they generally don't take long, and don't cost anything.

I had to take my two free shots at the Team Canada World Series of Poker freeroll from PokerStars. Thanks PokerStars. I mean it is the WSOP, The Poker Dream.

In the first one I busted out around 2300th out of 3000. I didn't get any hands to play. It's turbo format. The blinds were $50/$100 and I had around $1350 in my stack. I wanted to make a move. I didn't want to get to where doubling up would leave me still with a below average stack. My first playable hand was KQ in middle position, my first hand at a new table. UTG limped with around $900, big stack UTG+2 limped with around $5000. I pushed. Folded around UTG and UTG+2 both called. UTG showed AK, he should have open pushed. Big stack UTG+2 in freeroll style called two all ins with AJ. A jack flopped and big stack busted both of us.

In the second one I finished around 1200th out of 3000. In this one I got some cards and won a few hands. I got my stack up to around $4200. Blinds were $100/$200 and I had an above average stack. Still I was eager to make a move as it's turbo and I wanted to stay ahead of the escalating blinds. I was dealt 77 in the BB. Folded to CO with around $6000 who raised to $600. Micro stack SB didn't have enough to cover the small blind and was all in. I thought CO might be stealing and I was making a move here regardless. I pushed. CO paused a few moments and in freeroll style called for 2/3 of his stack with AJ. I was pleased to get my money in as a slight favorite to double up to a pretty good stack with a fair shot of at least finishing in the money. The flop was good but there was a jack on the turn and for the second time I busted out to AJ. No worries or regrets, such is freeroll.

One more freeroll. Stars had a promotion for the Sunday Million tournament. For 10 FPP you could enter a qualifying tournament which paid the top 27 finishers a buyin to the $215 event. This isn't quite a freeroll because there is a cost which is FPP. To determine if this is good value you need to quantify the value of an FPP. Stars has pegged the FPP with a conversion value of up to 10 cents. If you go onto the FPP store and divide the FPP cost of the stuff you can get by the number of FPPs it's around 5 cents per FPP. However one time there was a special 1000 player 50 FPP freeroll with a prize pool of $5,000. That works out to 10 cents per FPP.

So for the Sunday Million freeroll it has a prize pool of 27 * $215 = $5805. The per FPP value of this tournament is then $5805/# of players/10 FPP cost. I wanted at least a 25% premium on the 10 cents to enter this tournament. Setting the per FPP value to 12.5 cents and solving for the number of players yields the cutoff point of 4644 players. So if there were fewer than 4644 players in the tournament I would spend 10 FPP for a shot. If there were more I wouldn't join.

I was watching the lobby right up to the start time. Unfortunately around 5 minutes before the start it was over 4700 players, then well over 5000. So it wasn't worth enough to join, and it was an easy decision not to play. I was kind of leaning toward not playing anyway, which is why I set the 25% premium as the minimum to join. After two freerolls in a short time I was kind of tired of them and not real motivated for a third. So it's back to the cash games and sng tournaments for now for a while until the next big free promotion.

Moving up, sit n'go

I've been running well in the $1.75 2 table turbo sit n' go tournaments. I've won a few, and have had some good finishes. Currently I'm running an 80% ROI in them, although the sample size is not large enough to be conclusive.

I've decided to mix in some tournaments from the next level up. The next level to play will be the low stakes $6.50 2 table turbo sng. I find I enjoy the turbo format. They don't take more than an hour to play. Also I believe I play better in the late short stack stages than the early deep stack stages. So the turbo gets to that phase faster and spends more of the tournament in that mode. I find the $1.75 opponents don't play well in the late push/fold mode stages. Generally they become weak tight hoping to fold to a higher finish, avoiding putting their stack, or a large chunk of their stack at risk.

This query demonstrates how playing to win has helped my results in the $1.75. This is for the times I made the late stages.

So by being willing to bubble out in fifth or sixth, I was able to get more high first and second finishes. In the past it was more of a cluster in 3-4, with few bubble finishes and only occasional 1-2 finishes, and rare wins. That was the incorrect approach. The payout in these is weighted to the top and you need to play to finish in the top two, and not be afraid to bust just outside the fourth place money bubble.

The $6.50 has some advantages over the $1.75. In the $1.75 the registration fee is 1/6 of the buyin. In the $6.50 the registration fee is only 1/12 of the buyin.

Suppose you determine how often you need to finish first or second to cover the cost of playing. In the $1.75 the average between first and second is $9.45. So you need to finish in the top two 18.5% of the time.

In the $6.50 the average of the top two is $37.80. You only need to finish in the top two 17.2% of the time. So the break even point is lower because of the lower registration fee relative to the buyin.

In terms of ROI, I ran at 80% in the $1.75. That's $1.40 average profit for each one I played in. At the $6.50 level, I would only need 21.5% ROI to make $1.40 per tournament. So by playing higher you can make more per tournament with a much lower ROI.

Of course if my ROI at the $6.50 level is zero or negative then I'll have to stay at the $1.75 level. I hope I can get established at the low stakes level. I like the sound of that, low stakes player. The term small stakes player is also a positive one which I hope I can attain. But if not then the $1.75 is enjoyable and profitable so it's not too bad.

In addition to the $6.50, I'm also interested in trying the larger $4.40/180 player tournaments. The thing about the 180s is they take around four hours to finish. It is an unresolved challenge at this time figuring out how to come up with enough time to play in one.
